Knowing what to expect when shipping Air Cargo

Understanding Dimensional Weight

Dimensional weight is a pricing technique used by shipping carriers to calculate the cost of shipping a package based on its size, rather than its actual weight. It takes account the amount of space a package occupies in relation to its weight, and carriers charge whichever is greater between the actual weight and the dimensional weight. This is important to keep in mind when shipping large, lightweight items, as they may cost more to ship than expected based on their actual weight alone.

Actual weight = 550 Lbs

(L) x (W) x (H) / 166
48 x 40 x 58 / 166 = 670 Lbs Volume

Understanding Incoterms

Incoterms are a set of standardized trade terms used in international commercial transactions. They define the responsibilities of buyers and sellers for the delivery of goods under sales contracts.

The following seven incoterms can be used for both ocean and air shipping:

  • EXW – Ex Works

  • FCA – Free Carrier

  • CPT – Carriage Paid To

  • CIP – Carriage and Insurance Paid To

  • DAP – Delivered at Place

  • DPU – Delivered at Place Unloaded

  • DDP – Delivered Duty Paid
